Jakob Steiner (politician, 1813)

Jakob Steiner (born July 7, 1813 in Zielebach , † January 9, 1865 in Langenthal ) was a Swiss politician and judge . From 1854 until his death he was a member of the National Council, from 1854 to 1857 he was a member of the government of the Canton of Bern .

biography

The son of a farmer attended schools in Zielebach and Grandson , after which he completed a legal internship in Burgdorf . In 1834 Steiner began to study law at the University of Bern . After graduating in 1838, he joined Ulrich Ochsenbein's law firm . From 1841 he worked as an independent lawyer in Langenthal . From 1842 he was president of the court in Büren an der Aare , in 1844 in Wangen an der Aare , then from 1847 to 1853 he was a member of the Bern Higher Court . In 1857 he became a partner in his brother-in-law's hardware store in Langenthal.

Steiner took part in the second free march to Lucerne in March 1845 . In 1846 he was elected to the Grand Council of the Canton of Bern as a candidate for the radical liberals , but he was only a member of it for one year. When the radicals and the conservatives agreed on a coalition in 1854 ("Fusion"), they elected him to the cantonal government. For the next three years he was responsible for the military, railways and dumping departments. Steiner ran for the National Council elections in 1854 and was elected in the constituency of Oberaargau . After three successful elections on Jan. 9, 1865, he committed suicide .
