Jakob Trumpfheller

Jakob Trumpfheller (born January 9, 1887 in Erbach , † April 13, 1975 in Mannheim ) was a German politician ( SPD ).

Life

After elementary school, Trumpfheller completed an apprenticeship as a locksmith . Between 1907 and 1922 he was in Mannheim with Heinrich Lanz , Joseph Vögele and Benz & Cie. employed. Afterwards he was managing director of the community and state workers' association in Mannheim and, from 1923, at the same time chairman of the local ADGB cartel.

Already in 1919 Trumpfheller had become a member of the Mannheim Citizens' Committee for the SPD and from 1927 he was also a city councilor. In 1928 he was elected chairman of the Mannheim SPD and moved up as a member of the Baden state parliament , but decided not to run again the following year. In 1933 he was ousted from all offices by the National Socialists and imprisoned several times until 1945.

After the end of the Second World War he was managing director of the ADGB and then from 1946 to 1959 first mayor . As a representative of the trade unions, he was a member of the Provisional People's Representation for Württemberg-Baden . After the death of Fritz Cahn-Garnier in 1949 and after the election challenge against Hans Reschke in 1955/56, he was also the incumbent mayor of Mannheim. Since Trumpfheller was also chairman of the Mannheim SPD from 1945 to 1956, he had a decisive influence on the city's reconstruction time.

His wife Josephine Hilger (1889–1975), who came from Baden-Baden, died six days after him after almost 63 years of marriage. His grave in the main cemetery in Mannheim consists of a wide grave wall made of red sandstone. Stylized representations of historic and new Mannheim buildings, including the old department store and the National Theater, can be found on it .

Honors

In 1964 the city of Mannheim granted Trumpfheller honorary citizenship . After his death in 1975 a street was named after him.
