Life

Jakob Vogel started to work in a textile printing company at the age of eight . He continued his autodidactic education, read the Bible and the Göttingen muse almanac and is said to have owned a library of 600 books by the age of twenty. At the age of 21 he began a hike through Europe. Overcome by homesickness, he wrote his first poem. In 1839 he returned to Switzerland.

In 1843 he took over from his father-in-law Cosmus Freuler the first printing and publishing company founded in 1798 in the canton of Glarus on Landsgemeindeplatz . Among other things, he published an almanac of the muses, several volumes of his own poems, a four-volume work The poetic national literature of Switzerland from Haller to the present , edited by Robert Weber and Johann Jakob Honegger . Several attempts with a daily newspaper failed, as did a political career.

Vogel supported young poets, ran an open house, a “gathering place for almost all writers and poets in Switzerland” (JJ Honegger). His literary role model was Heinrich Heine . His own poems were often about nature, the mountains and the seasons, the local Glärnisch and the Klöntal .

His first wife Babette died in 1851. Jakob Vogel married again at the age of 78. Paralyzed on one side, he died on April 22nd, 1899 "in the mattress tomb like his role model Heinrich Heine".

In 1895 Jakob Spälti-Hefti bought the J. Vogel book printing company. The company still exists today as Spälti Druck AG in Glarus.
