The Jakobskapelle is the crypt chapel of the Counts of Schönborn in Wiesentheid . It is also called the Kreuzkapelle and is located on Feuerbacher Straße.

history

Count Johann Otto von Dernbach had a burial chapel built for himself. It was started in 1686 and completed in 1692. The builder was the Würzburg court architect Antonio Petrini . Count Johann Otto died during the construction work, leaving behind his third wife Maria Eleonore. In 1701 she married Count Rudolf Franz Erwein von Schönborn . From then on, the chapel was used as a burial place for the Schönborn house.

The chapel underwent extensive changes in 1712 when the octagonal structure was expanded, four wings were added and the cross-shaped church was created. The architect was the Jesuit Father Loyson. A family crypt was laid out under the altar . The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation classifies the chapel as a monument under the number D-6-75-178-46.

On the central rotunda, a bell tower with two bells towers above the dome. Rectangular side arms with hipped roofs protrude in the four directions. The portal with a round arch is on the north side. There is a round window in it above the entrance.

Furnishing

The altar is in the middle of the Jacob's Chapel. A tall wooden crucifix by Johann Georg Neßtfell , who also carried out the woodwork in the Wiesentheider parish church of St. Mauritius , towers above it. The stucco work dates from the 17th century. The workshop of Jakobs van der Auvera produced a crucifixion group .

Just like the St. Mauritius Church, this house of God has painted mock architecture . On the ceiling painting, the ceiling collapses on one side. Several frightened people are shown on a circle. A few columns and pilasters support the collapsing roof. The collapsing parts open a blue sky. The painting was created by Francesco Marchini , who specialized in so-called illusion painting.
