The church in Geesdorf

The Church of St. Andreas in Geesdorf , Lower Franconia, is the Catholic branch church of the Wiesentheider district. It is located in the middle of the village on Rüderner Straße. Today the church is part of the Kitzingen deanery .

history

Geesdorf was first mentioned in the sources in 1306. However, there was no place of worship in the village for several centuries. In the early 19th century a small prayer room was built in the old schoolhouse. The Catholic community was assigned to the parish of Kirchschönbach . It was not until the second half of the 19th century that preparations began to give the village its own church building.

In 1862 the new building took shape. The foundation stone for the new church was laid on May 8, 1862, when Joseph Mack from Würzburg was won as the master builder . Just one year later, on May 25, 1863, the branch church was assigned by the Kirchschönbach pastor Joseph Kuhn. Renovations were made in 1977 and 1986. The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation classifies the church as an architectural monument .

architecture

The church presents itself as a small, neo-Gothic hall building . It is easted and has a roof turret above the west facade . He has a square pointed helmet, underneath which four clocks were attached. Three pointed arch windows shed light on the inside of the church. The facade is structured by the pointed arch portal and an ox-eye. The sacristy south of the choir was built in 1992.

Furnishing

The furnishings mostly come from the time of construction. The high altar was built in neo -Gothic style by Franz Schuler from Würzburg. A high tabernacle structure with a cross forms the decoration of the altar. Figures of saints are attached to the right and left: on the left is the figure of St. Wendelin, on the right is St. Andrew. They came to the church in 1877. Further figures from the 18th century can be found in the nave.

A total of 14 stations of the cross run through the nave of the church. The painting of St. Wendelin is from the 18th century; it was previously hung in the prayer room in the old schoolhouse. The organ on the west gallery was created in 1863. Anton Etthöfer from Margetshöchheim is likely to be the builder. In 1967 the registers were reduced to four. The Hoffmann company from Ostheim vor der Rhön carried out this renovation.

Bells

The ringing of the Andreaskirche consists of two bells. After the church building was erected, two bells were placed in the church in the 1920s. During the Second World War , one of the two bells then had to be released, so that the ringing was not complete until 1952.
