Jamaica, Land We Love
Jamaica, Land We Love is the national anthem of Jamaica .
The lyrics are by Hugh Sherlock , the music by Robert Lightbourne . Text and music were created independently of each other and were combined into a song by Mapletoft Poulle . After a publicly advertised competition in September 1961, the piece became Jamaica's national anthem by a resolution of the House of Representatives on July 19, 1962 with independence from Great Britain.
- Eternal Father bless our land,
- Guard us with your mighty hand;
- Keep us free from evil pow'rs,
- Be our light through countless hours.
- To our leaders, Great Defender,
- Grant true wisdom from above,
- Justice, Truth be ours forever,
- Jamaica, land we love,
- Jamaica, Jamaica, Jamaica, land we love.
- Teach us true respect for all,
- Stir response to duty's call;
- Strengthen us the weak to cherish,
- Give us vision read we perish,
- Knowledge send us, heavenly Father,
- Grant true wisdom from above.
- Justice, Truth be ours forever,
- Jamaica, land we love,
- Jamaica, Jamaica, Jamaica, land we love
In the original version, the word Guide was used instead of Guard on the second line .
