Jamaica, Land We Love

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jamaica, Land We Love is the national anthem of Jamaica .

The lyrics are by Hugh Sherlock , the music by Robert Lightbourne . Text and music were created independently of each other and were combined into a song by Mapletoft Poulle . After a publicly advertised competition in September 1961, the piece became Jamaica's national anthem by a resolution of the House of Representatives on July 19, 1962 with independence from Great Britain.

Eternal Father bless our land,
Guard us with your mighty hand;
Keep us free from evil pow'rs,
Be our light through countless hours.
To our leaders, Great Defender,
Grant true wisdom from above,
Justice, Truth be ours forever,
Jamaica, land we love,
Jamaica, Jamaica, Jamaica, land we love.
Teach us true respect for all,
Stir response to duty's call;
Strengthen us the weak to cherish,
Give us vision read we perish,
Knowledge send us, heavenly Father,
Grant true wisdom from above.
Justice, Truth be ours forever,
Jamaica, land we love,
Jamaica, Jamaica, Jamaica, land we love

In the original version, the word Guide was used instead of Guard on the second line .
