James Abrahams (born February 21, 1868 in New Mills , † 1947 ) was a Scottish football player .

Career

Abrahams played no later than the 1890/91 season in the reserves of the Scottish club Renton FC , whose first team had been excluded from the Scottish League in the 1890/91 season due to professionalism . At the beginning of the 1891/92 season he came under the name Abram in two league games for the first team, for the first time in a 1: 4 home defeat by Glasgow Rangers on August 15, 1891, Renton's first league appearance since the association ban. With the FC Everton , the Bolton Wanderers and Notts County , Abrahams is said to have attracted the interest of several English clubs in the Football League , at the end of November 1891 Notts County secured the services of Abraham.

Notts had significant problems on the right winger position and had previously unsuccessfully tried George Bakewell , Jimmy Burns and Allan Elleman . Abrahams was featured by the Nottingham Journal as a player with a "fatal shot on goal and fears nothing". For the first time he ran for Notts on December 5, 1891 in an away game in Sunderland , the game ended against the eventual champions with a 4-0 defeat. On the following two match days he formed the storm line with Tom McInnes , Jimmy Oswald , Harry Walkerdine and Harry Daft . This was followed by a 6-0 defeat against Preston North End in winter conditions, when five Notts players refused to continue the game during the second half and the team ended the game with five players. In his third appearance, a home game against Blackburn Rovers , he contributed with a goal to the 2-2 draw. In December he was also said to have been temporarily suspended for being drunk. The press reports after three appearances were partly extremely negative, so it was reported in the Athletic News of the assumption that "two players with this name were at Renton and Mr. Thomas [Notts County director] had bagged the wrong bird." And the Nottingham Journal correspondent said: "Abraham, sorry I am to say this, is far from the man who was expected to be."

In June 1892, after four competitive appearances for Notts County, his move to Stockton FC was announced shortly afterwards, but he is said to have joined Middlesbrough FC - both clubs of the Northern League . Two Abrahams were possibly active there at the same time, so next to a “J. Abraham "also a" W. Abraham ”, possibly the player who was announced as a left half-forward as a new addition to Renton.
