James Finn

James Finn (* 6. December 1956 in Brooklyn , New York City ) is an American tenor saxophonist of the Creative Jazz .

James Finn initially played in various local R&B and funk bands. An early mentor was saxophonist JR Monterose ; Finn then took lessons from Roland Hanna , Benny Golson , Jimmy Heath and Andrew Cyrille . Finn's main interests then became free jazz and John Coltrane's jazz recordings after 1965. In New York, Finn met the pianist John Esposito and the multi-instrumentalist Arthur Rhames , with whom he worked for a while. Later he played a. a. in the bands of Roland Hanna and Roy Campbell .

It was only relatively late that Finn had the opportunity to make recordings under his own name; In 2003 he recorded the trio album Opening the Gates for Cadence Jazz Records , on which Dominic Duval and Whit Dickey played. This was followed by the album Plaza de Toros (on Clean Feed ) and Faith in a Seed (on CIMP , 2004), recorded in December 2003 ; The drummer here was Warren Smith . On his own label Gingko Leaf , Finn released a series of concert recordings ( The Last Matador, Into the Afterworld, Life at the Via Della Pace, Inside Eye and In Stravinsky's House ).

According to Steven Loewy, his recordings in Allmusic are influenced by Archie Shepp and Albert Ayler .
