The James Hall Museum of Transport , abbreviated JHMT , is a technical history museum in Johannesburg . The collection is the largest and most comprehensive for land transport in South Africa . The museum was built by Late Jimmie Hall together with the City of Johannesburg and opened in February 1964.

Carts

The museum exhibits carts from the period from 1870 to 1910. These include Cape Carts (German "Kap Wagen"), two-wheeled carriages that were specially designed for use on the South African roads; also handcarts , hearses , stagecoaches and ox wagons .

Bicycles and motorbikes

There are bicycles and motorbikes on display from the period 1786-1960. The collection includes scooters and high bikes . All well-known brands, especially the English ones , are represented in the motorcycles . You can also see a rare NSU The Imp from 1909.

Omnibuses and coaches

The collection contains several double-decker buses that were previously in service in Cape Town , Johannesburg and Durban . You can find vehicles from Daimler , AEC and Guy . A double-decker bus from London has been preserved and is used for tours. There is also a one-story bus converted into a moving Christmas crib .

Fire engines and fire equipment

A part of the museum is dedicated to fire fighting technology and shows exhibits from the period 1877 to 1960. In addition to jumping sheets , buckets , hoses , hand pumps and fire extinguishers , an old fire alarm center of the Johannesburg fire department is on display. Turntable ladders from the manufacturers Dennis , Magirus-Deutz , Morris Magirus, Leyland , Merryweather and Ford can be seen on vehicles .

Motor vehicles

The collection of cars covers the period 1900 to 1980. All common car manufacturers are represented. The oldest model is a Clément-Panhard from 1900. In addition to fuel-powered cars, two electric cars and a car with a wood carburetor are on display.

Steam powered vehicles

As a specialty, the museum has a larger collection of steam-powered vehicles. In addition to the steamroller and tractor, there are several steam-powered trucks - often also called Sentinels - an omnibus and a crane. Some of the vehicles are in working order.

Trams and trolleybuses

The museum shows trams and trolleybuses from the years 1896 to 1986. Most of the vehicles are double-decker and ran in Johannesburg or Pretoria. You can also see a trolleybus from Durban.
