James Hoy, Baron Hoy

James "Jimmie" Hutchison Hoy, Baron Hoy PC ( January 21, 1909 - August 7, 1976 ) was a British Labor Party politician who was a member of the House of Commons for 25 years and in 1970 under the Life Peerages Act 1958 as Life Peer Member of the House of Lords became.

Life

Hoy worked as an interior decorator after attending Causewayside and Science Public Schools in Edinburgh .

In the general election on July 5, 1945 , Hoy was elected for the first time as a member of the House of Commons for the Labor Party in the Leith constituency and was able to prevail with a majority of 9,455 votes over the former multiple minister Ernest Brown , who had been a by-election ( By-election ) held this constituency for the National Liberal Party in March 1927 . During his first legislative session he was from 1947 to 1950 Parliamentary Private Secretary Arthur Woodburn , the Scotland-Minister ( Secretary of State for Scotland ) the government of Prime Minister Clement Attlee .

After the dissolution of the Leith constituency , Hoy was elected to the House of Commons in the general election on February 23, 1950 in the newly created constituency of Edinburgh Leith and was a member of this until the June 18, 1970 elections . During this time he became Vice President of Trustee Savings Bank (TSB) in 1957 .

After the Labor Party won the general election on October 15, 1964 , Hoy was appointed Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food by Prime Minister Harold Wilson , and held that junior ministerial post until on the defeat of his party in the general election on June 18, 1970. In this role he was, together with John Mackie, who was also acting as Parliamentary Secretary, one of the closest collaborators of the then Minister Fred Peart and, most recently, Cledwyn Hughes . During this time he was also appointed Privy Councilor on June 25, 1969 .

Through a letters patent dated July 4, 1970, Hoy became a member of the House of Lords under the Life Peerages Act 1958 as a life peer with the title Baron Hoy , of Leith in the County of the City of Edinburgh, and was a member of the House of Lords until his death .

Jimmie Hoy Street in the Edinburgh district of Leith was named in his honor.
