James Ogilvy, 1st Lord Ogilvy of Airlie
James Ogilvy, 1st Lord Ogilvy of Airlie (* around 1430 , † 1504 ), was a Scottish nobleman and diplomat.
He was the son and heir of Sir John Ogilvy of Lintrathen († 1489) from his first marriage to Marian Seton, daughter of Sir William Seton of Seton . His father was a squire of Airlie in Angus , including Airlie Castle . In 1483 his lands were combined to form the feudal barony of Lintrathen . When his father died, James inherited his property and was also chief of Clan Ogilvy .
On April 28, 1491 he was given the hereditary title Lord Ogilvy of Airlie . Shortly afterwards he was sent to the court of King John I of Denmark, Norway and Sweden as the Scottish ambassador .
In his first marriage he married Elizabeth Kennedy around 1450, with whom he had at least four children:
- John Ogilvy, 2nd Lord Ogilvy of Airlie († around 1505);
- Walter Ogilvy, ancestor of the Ogilvy of Balfour family line ;
- Thomas Ogilvy († after 1483);
- Margaret ⚭ Gilbert Ramsay, Younger of Banff .
In his second marriage, he had married Helen Douglas, widow of William Graham, 3rd Lord Graham († 1472), daughter of William Douglas, 2nd Earl of Angus , at the latest in 1478 . With her he had at least five children:
- Archibald Ogilvy († after 1504);
- Alexander Ogilvy († after 1494) ⚭ Nicola Stratoun;
- Malcolm Ogilvy († after 1501);
- John Ogilvy of Craig († after 1505);
- Isabella Ogilvy ⚭ Alexander Stewart, 2nd Earl of Buchan (1465–1505).
In his third marriage he married Jean Lyle († around 1525), with whom he had at least two daughters:
- Janet Ogilvy († after 1503);
- Mariota Ogilvy, Lady of Melgund († 1575), mistress of Cardinal David Beaton (1494–1546), Archbishop of St. Andrews.
He died in 1504, on September 25, 1504 his son, eldest son from his first marriage, John, had succeeded him as 2nd Lord Ogilvy of Airlie.
