James Sant (born April 23, 1820 in Croydon , † July 12, 1916 in London ) was a British painter.

Life

James Sant studied with John Varley and August Calcott . From 1840 he exhibited at the Royal Academy, in 1870 he was elected member of the Academy. He specialized in portrait and genre painting and in 1872 became court painter to Queen Victoria . His style met contemporary tastes; In 1889 he received a bronze medal at the World Exhibition in Paris . In his later years, when his portraits were starting to go a little out of style, he also painted numerous landscapes.

In addition to exhibiting at the Royal Academy for 72 years, he also exhibited a total of 39 paintings in the Walker Art Gallery during the Liverpool Autumn Exhibitions. 24 of his paintings were exhibited at the Liverpool Academy between 1847 and 1864.

Works of Sant are u. a. in museums in Glasgow , Liverpool, London , Manchester , Preston , Rochdale and Sydney . With his wife Elizabeth or Eliza, geb. Thomson, he had at least one daughter.
