James William McBain
James William McBain (born March 22, 1882 in Chatham (New Brunswick) , † March 12, 1953 in Palo Alto ) was a Canadian chemist ( colloid chemistry ).
McBain studied chemistry from 1899 at the University of Toronto with a bachelor's degree in 1903 and a master's degree in 1904. He then went on to further studies at the University of Leipzig and Heidelberg University , where he worked with Georg Hermann Quincke in 1909 with the work Zur Knowledge of catalysis in heterogeneous systems: the decomposition of chromochlorine with colloidal platinum was promoted . From 1906 he was a lecturer at University College Bristol , where he was professor of physical chemistry in 1919 . In 1927 he became a professor at Stanford University , where he retired in 1947.
From 1949 he organized the Indian National Chemical Laboratory in Poona on behalf of the Indian government and was its director in 1951/52.
He introduced the term micelles to colloid chemistry and in 1909 the term sorption . In the 1950s, he dealt with colloidal electrolytes .
He developed centrifuges with which he determined sedimentation equilibrium and particle sizes , and a sorption spring balance.
In 1923 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society . He received the Davy Medal in 1939 .
