Jamestown is a city with the status of City and at the same administrative center ( the county seat ) of Stutsman County in the US -amerikanischen State North Dakota .
geography
To the west lies the capital of the state of Bismarck at a distance of around 150 kilometers . The distance to the eastern city of Fargo is 130 kilometers. US Highway 281 runs right through the city . The Highway Interstate 94 affected Jamestown in the south. The city is on the James River .
history
The city was founded in 1872 by General Thomas Rosser of the Northern Pacific Railway and named after his hometown of Jamestown , Virginia . Due to the favorable traffic situation, the city grew rapidly, established itself as a trading center and founded a college . Today it is also active in tourism, houses a bison museum ( National Buffalo Museum ) and shows the tallest statue of an American bison ( American bison or American buffalo ) with a height of almost eight meters . This also symbolizes the fact that in the 19th century large herds of this species populated the surrounding prairie . Even today the city is nicknamed "The Buffalo City" and "Pride of the Prairie".
