Jan Arvid Hellström

Jan Arvid Hellström (born August 30, 1941 in Öckerö ; † December 29, 1994 in Växjö ) was a Swedish Lutheran theologian and bishop as well as a novelist and poet.

Life

After finishing school, Hellström studied Protestant theology at Lund University and was ordained in 1964 . He then worked in the service of the Church of Sweden until he became Dr. theol. PhD and a lectureship at Uppsala University . In 1984 he was promoted to professor of church studies ( kyrko- och samfundsvetenskap ). In 1991 he was appointed bishop in the diocese of Växjö , but died after a few years of the consequences of a car accident.

In addition to specialist publications on Swedish church history (especially on the early Middle Ages and the Swedish colony on St. Barthélemy in the Caribbean) and on hymnology , Hellström also wrote works of fiction, including a number of historical novels about the Middle Ages and New Sweden, the first Swedish settlement in North America , as well as four volumes of poetry and (under the pseudonym Natanael Frid ) four humorous detective novels. He also composed numerous hymns (also as translations from German, English and other languages) with which he influenced the New Spiritual Song . He is represented in the Swedish hymnbook from 1986 with two poems and 14 text adaptations .

Hellström was married to the singer Lena Hellström (1941-2003).
