Jan Burssens (born June 27, 1925 in Mechelen , Belgium ; † January 11, 2002 in Nevele , Belgium) was a Belgian ( Flemish ) painter .

January Burssens is one of the most important Belgian existentialist , abstract painters .

Jan Burssens was one of the first artists who dealt with the technique of drip painting (a form of action painting ) in Belgium after the Second World War .

His art was influenced by the existentialism of Jean-Paul Sartre and the abstract painting style of Jackson Pollock on the one hand and the surrealistic, disembodied pictures of Francis Bacon on the other.

Burssens studied at the Academy of Ghent for only one year and remained essentially self-taught .

From 1951 to 1954 member of " La Jeune Peinture Belge " (or: " Jonge Belgische Schilderkunst "). In 1952 he was a founding member of the Belgian artist group Art Abstrait . In 1959 Burssens was a participant in documenta 2 in Kassel .

Jan Burssens died on January 11, 2002 in Nevele, Belgium .
