Jan Eckel

Jan Eckel (* 1973 in Hanover ) is a German historian and professor at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen .

Live and act

Starting in 1992, Eckel first studied languages, economics and culture at the University of Passau as part of the pre-diploma course . From 1994 he studied German, history and Spanish, first in Passau, and later at the University of Freiburg . After a stay abroad at the University of Salamanca , he passed his state examination in Freiburg in 2000. After completing his other studies, Eckel worked as a research assistant at the History Department of the University of Freiburg from 2003. There he was in 2004 with one of Ulrich Herbert supervised work on Hans Rothfels Dr. phil. PhD. For this work, Eckel received the university-internal Gerhard-Ritter-Preis in 2005. From 2004 he worked as a university assistant in Freiburg. After research stays at Columbia University and the Jena Center for the History of the 20th Century at the University of Jena , Eckel became an Academic Councilor in Freiburg in 2011 .

In 2013 Eckel completed his habilitation in Freiburg and subsequently represented Anselm Doering-Manteuffel's chair at the University of Tübingen until 2014 . From 2015 to 2016 Eckel held the full professorship for international history and historical conflict and peace research at the University of Cologne . In October 2016, as the regular successor of the retired Doering-Manteuffel, he permanently moved to the full professorship for modern history with special emphasis on contemporary history at the University of Tübingen. At the same time Eckel became director of the contemporary history seminar there.

Eckel's main research interests lie in the history of the humanities and historical sciences as well as the history of human rights and the history of international politics in the 20th century.
