Jan Fryderyk Dobrowolski , as an interpreter sometimes just Jan Fryderyk , (born July 9, 1944 in Trzebinia ) is a Polish pianist and composer . At the beginning of his career he played in classical music, but turned to jazz and light music at an early age.

Dobrowolski first learned to play the piano from his mother, a concert pianist and piano teacher. At the age of twelve he was already enthusiastic about jazz and as a teenager played in various bands ragtime , bebop and swing . After graduating from high school in Gleiwitz in 1964 , he began to study architecture at the Technical University there , and was also a freelance student of new music at the Krakow Conservatory. He won first prize at the “Jazz at the Oder” competitions in Wrocław in 1967 and at “ Jugend musiziert ” in Kalisz in 1968, as well as at the “Jeunesse Musical Festival” in Częstochowa in 1969. In the same year he completed his architectural studies with a degree in engineering , after that he began studying composition in Warsaw and concentrated on his pianist career. He was initially known as a Chopin interpreter , but then focused on jazz and world music . At the 1972 Montreux Jazz Festival he performed together with bassist Jacek Bednarek as the Jan Fryderyk Dobrowolski Duo . With his style he influenced the development of jazz in Poland in the 1980s. Extraordinary line-ups for live recordings with Charlie Mariano on saxophone and Alberto Alarcon on castanets were not only a commercial success, but also won over the critics. He composed and interpreted various music related to driving, which was also designed to be heard while driving.
