Jan Janszoon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jan Janszoon van Haarlem , also known as Murad Reis or Murat Reis the Younger (* around 1570 in Haarlem , † after 1641 in Morocco ), was a North African pirate of Dutch origin. He was the first Grand Admiral of the corsairs of the barbarian republic of Bou-Regreg around the city of Salé , from 1623 briefly their governor and from 1635 governor of Oualidia in southern Morocco (north of Safi ). Jan Janszoon was considered one of the most notorious corsairs of the 17th century - the best known of the “Salé vagabonds”.

Janszoon was initially a pirate on his own account who hijacked Spanish and other ships. In 1619 he moved from his previous base in Algiers to Salé, where he was promoted to amīr al-bahr in the pirate fleet. In 1623 Sultan Mulai Ziden (r. 1608–1623) appointed him governor of Salé. Presumably it was not a real appointment of the Sultan, but only the confirmation of an accomplished fact in order to preserve the outward appearance of the sovereign. The Dutch who converted to Islam received a daughter of the sultan as his third wife in 1624 to consolidate the relationship. The sale of stolen goods, other commercial transactions and port duties helped Murad Reis and the city to great prosperity. The slave trade was also of economic importance. ( Robinson Crusoe , hero in the novel of the same name by Daniel Defoe , spent two years in fiction in Salé as a slave to pirates.)

From 1627, the political situation deteriorated for Murad Reis, as the leadership of the Kasbah of Salé proclaimed the independent Republic of Bou-Regreg. He then moved his base back to Algiers and strengthened his pirate platoons at sea.
