Jan Sokol

Jan Sokol (born April 18, 1936 in Prague , † February 16, 2021 ) was a Czech philosopher , university professor and politician.

Life

Jan Sokol, who also worked professionally as a goldsmith and mechanic, was the founding dean of the Faculty of Human Sciences at the Charles University in Prague . As one of the first signatories of Charter 77 , he was also active in various citizens' movements before the fall of the Wall.

Sokol was married to the daughter of the philosopher Jan Patočka , Františka Patočková, with whom he has a daughter and two sons.

Political activity

In 1990 he became a member of the Czech Občanské fórum party in the Czechoslovak parliament. In this capacity he was also Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the parliamentary delegation in the European Parliament . After the break up of the citizens ' forum in 1991, he became involved in the citizens' movement and was its deputy chairman. In 1996 he unsuccessfully applied for a seat in the Senate for the KDU-ČSL . In 1997 he became an advisor to the then Minister of Education.

In the first half of 1998 he was a non-party Minister for Schools, Youth and Physical Education in the interim government of Prime Minister Josef Tošovský . As a non-party candidate, nominated by the governing coalition at the time, he also ran for the office of President on February 28, 2003 in the third round of the elections then held by the Czech Parliament . However, the ODS candidate Václav Klaus won .

Sokol was also a member of the Czech PEN club .

Sokol as a scientist

Since he was not allowed to study under the communist regime, he was only able to study mathematics in the second educational path. In 1993 he received his doctorate in anthropology from Charles University, he completed his habilitation in 1997 and became professor of philosophy in 2000.

In addition to a number of written books, he also participated in the ecumenical translation of the Bible . He completed studies at the Universities of Heidelberg and Pennsylvania and as a Senior Fellow at Harvard University .

In 2007 he was accepted by the French Republic into the Legion of Honor as Officier de la Légion d'honneur .
