Jan Stephan van Calcar
Jan Stephan van Calcar , also Jan Stephan von Kalkar (* 1499 in Kalkar , † 1546 in Naples ) was a Dutch painter and graphic artist during the Renaissance .
Life
Jan Stephan van Calcar came from the upper Rhine Valley and is said to have escaped to Venice with a young woman around 1536 , where he became a student of Titian . Jan Stephan's works were so similar to those of his teacher that they were often almost indistinguishable. After 1543 he spent a few years in Naples , where he worked as a portrait painter and also died.
He was involved in the woodcuts for Andreas Vesalius ' work “De humanis corporis fabrica” , but whether the twelve large figures it contains are by Jan Stephan van Calcar is disputed.
