Johannes "Jan" Villerius (born February 8, 1939 ; † May 7, 2013 ) was a Dutch football player who was active for Sparta Rotterdam and ADO Den Haag in the Eredivisie and once played in the Dutch national team. With Sparta he became Dutch champion in 1959.

Club career

Villerius came from Xerxes within Rotterdam to Sparta, where he made his debut in the away game at Fortuna'54 on December 21, 1958 . In the 1958/59 championship season he was used four times in the Eredivisie. The midfielder then played with the Rotterdamers in the European Cup and was in the starting line-up in all three quarter-finals against the Glasgow Rangers . After three seasons with the “Spartans”, he moved to ADO in The Hague in 1961. The 22-year-old was able to secure a regular place in the first team and made 34 games in his first season. Villerius had to wait until January 12, 1964 for his first goal in the Ehrendivision. In the 2-2 draw in Volendam , he contributed the goal to the visitors' 2-0 lead. His last of 243 games in the Eredivisie (37 for Sparta, 206 for ADO) was the game against DWS Amsterdam on October 8, 1967.

National team

Villerius came on October 14, 1962 for his only assignment in the Nederlands Elftal . Bondscoach Elek Schwartz put him in midfield against Belgium in Antwerp's Bosuil Stadium ; the Netherlands lost 0-2. In the following games - against Switzerland and again against Belgium - he had to make do with the place on the bench before he was removed from the Oranje squad again.

After the active time

After his active career, Villerius was temporarily coach of the amateur team of De Postduiven in Rotterdam. In March 2009, his former club Sparta honored him on the 50th anniversary of the championship.
