Jan Widacki

Jan Stefan Widacki (born January 6, 1948 in Cracow ) is a Polish legal scholar , full professor, diplomat , politician and since 2007 a member of the Sejm in the VI . Electoral term.

Scientific and professional activity

In 1969 he finished his law studies at the Jagiellonian University and also studied philosophy . In 1972 he received his doctorate in law and in 1977 he completed his habilitation. In the same year he took over the chair for criminology at the Silesian University in Katowice , where he also became vice dean. From 1983 to 1990 he lectured at the Catholic University of Lublin and worked as a visiting professor in the USA . In 1984 he became a professor. Until the end of the 1980s he worked as a criminologist and expert at court .

He has been running a law firm since 1996.

In the 1990s, he defended, among other things, the man who was accused of multiple murders with the pseudonym "Incasent", who was eventually acquitted. He was also Roman Kluska's legal representative . In a lustration procedure, he represented Henryk Karkosza and was Jan Kulczyk's representative before the Sejm's investigative committee to clarify the Orlen affair and in the dispute with Roman Giertych .

Public activity

In 1980 he joined the opposition union Solidarność , but also belonged to the Polska Zjednoczona Partia Robotnicza (Polish United Workers' Party - PZPR), from which he resigned on December 13, 1981 after a state of war was declared.

In the early 1990s, Widacki was appointed State Secretary in the government of Tadeusz Mazowiecki . He supervised the inspection of the Służba Bezpieczeństwa (Communist Security Service - SB) and prepared a new police law. He was a co-author of the "Rokita Report".

From 1992 to 1996 he was ambassador to Lithuania . In 1996 he was awarded the Lithuanian Order of Grand Duke Giedymin II class with a star.

In 2007 he founded the Movement for Democracy Association . He is a columnist for the left-wing weekly Przegląd .

In the parliamentary elections in 2007 he was elected to the Sejm for the constituency of Kraków with 24,963 votes on the list of Lewica i Demokraci (Left and Democrats - LiD). He is a member of the Sejm commission for administration and home affairs and deputy chairman of the commission for constitutional responsibility.

On April 9, 2008 he was a co-founder of the Democratic Group.
