Jan von Hein

Jan von Hein (born August 30, 1967 in Hamburg ) is a German lawyer and professor at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg .

Life

Von Hein studied law at the University of Hamburg , where he passed the first state examination in 1994 and the second state examination in 1997. Between his first and second exams, he worked as a research assistant at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg . After a one-year research stay as a research fellow at Harvard Law School , he did his doctorate with Jan Kropholler in Hamburg. The Max Planck Society awarded him the Otto Hahn Medal in 1998 for this work . As a result, von Hein worked as a scientific advisor at the Max Planck Institute until he completed his habilitation in 2007.

Immediately after his habilitation, von Hein took on a chair at the University of Bonn in the 2007 summer semester . From July 2007 he held his first full professorship at the University of Trier , where he succeeded Bernd von Hoffmann . In July 2013 he moved to the chair for civil law, IPR and comparative law at the University of Freiburg, where he succeeded Gerhard Hohloch as director of the Institute for Comparative and International Private Law, Department III.

His main research interests are in international private law, comparative law and international and European civil procedural law. Von Hein is also a member of numerous associations, such as the Association of Civil Law Teachers , the German Association for International Law and the German-American Lawyers Association.
