Jane Gaskell
Jane Gaskell (born July 7, 1941 in Grange-over-Sands , Lancashire ) is a British fantasy and horror author.
Life
Gaskell is the daughter of Andrew Gaskell Denvil and Edith, née Hackett. She wrote her first work ( Strange Evil , 1957) as a student at the age of fourteen.
Her best-known work is the fantasy cycle about the heiress to the throne Cija, the first volume of which was published in 1963. Cija is revered as a goddess in her homeland, but since the soldiers of the queen, her mother, are subject to invaders from the north, Cija has to take part as a hostage in the further course of the campaign, which aims at the mysterious Atlantis . As soon as the army of invaders invades the southern realm, Cija becomes superfluous as a hostage and has to suffer many hardships from then on. They range from minor humiliations and insults to rape and death. Five volumes have now been published: The Serpent , The Dragon , Atlan , The City and Some Summer Lands .
Her novel All Neat in Black Stockings , published in 1968, was made into a film in 1969. She also wrote the script for the film All Neat in Black Stockings with Hugh Whitmore.
In 1970 she received the Somerset Maugham Award for her novel A Sweet, Sweet Summer .
In 1963 she married Gerald Lynch. In 1965 a daughter was born. In 1968 the marriage was divorced again. Gaskell is distantly related to Elizabeth Gaskell , a well-known 19th century writer and biographer of Charlotte Brontë .
