Janka is a German indie pop band from Hamburg and Berlin that was founded in 2003.

history

As early as 1993, while still at school, Kai Gabriel, Thomas Liman and Tom Unguraitys started making music together in Celle and founded the band Blobkanal in 1998 . The track Peter Shaw appeared soon after on a sampler for the music magazine Visions and the group starred in the opening act for Kettcar and Gary . However, the announced debut album never appeared and in June 2003 the band broke up.

Gabriel, Liman and Unguraitys then founded the band Janka together with Niclas Breslein from junges glueck .

In 2004 the song We share wounds appeared on various samplers from, among others, Wallpaper Records . In the same year, with the support of Kettcar bassist Reimer Bustorff, the EP Unter Palmen, produced by Plemo , was released with six titles. In 2005, Breslein was replaced by Ingmar Rehberg on bass, who, like the rest of the band members, comes from Celle. In the following years Janka toured with bands he was friends with, such as Schrottlinie , Herrenmagazin and junges luckck ; In 2006 the four bands also released a joint split single . On October 27, 2006, the debut album In die Arme von was finally released . It was mastered by Chris von Rautenkranz and finally released on the Decoder Records label. The album received mostly benevolent reviews, says Katja Scherle from laut.de : "Simple, natural, lively and intelligent: Hamburger Schule cumulates with sedate Berlin pop" and Daniel Erk writes on Jetzt.de , the youth magazine of the SZ : "Janka are one of those bands that wrongly slip through unnoticed under the excitedly honking Tomte-Juli-Helden-Indiepop radar " . A professional video was shot for the single Punkt . In the meantime the band is hardly active anymore, but some of the band members still play together under the name Lucky Steve & The Magic Hoffmanns .
