Prunk was born near Sevnica in central Slovenia. He studied history and sociology at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Ljubljana , graduated in 1966, obtained his master's degree in 1972 and his doctorate degree in 1976 with a thesis on the relations between the Slovenian Christian-Socialist movement and the Communist Party of Slovenia within the Osvobodilna Fronta , which was very controversial at the time.

He completed his studies in 1969 at the University of Leipzig and at the Institute for European History , and was visiting professor at the universities of Freiburg im Breisgau and Cologne .

Today, Prunk is a full professor of modern history and the history of political ideas at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Ljubljana .

Among other things, Prunk wrote texts on analytical political science, modern history, the emergence of modern political movements and the history of social and political views in Slovenia. He also wrote on the history of Slovenian political movements from the end of the 19th century to the Second World War, with a special focus on Slovenian Christian socialism.

He is a member of the Institute for European History, Mainz and Senior Fellow of the Center for European Integration Research , Bonn .

Prunk was also actively involved in politics. As an early admirer of Jože Pučnik , he joined the Slovenian Social Democratic Union after the democratization. He was an active member of the Slovene Democratic Party and served as chair of the Education Committee until 2008 when he resigned due to a disagreement. He then became a strong critic of Prime Minister Janez Janša , whom he accused of being a “liberal with an authoritarian touch” who sought to become a “Slovenian Józef Piłsudski ”.

From 1992 to 1993 he was Minister without Portfolio for Slovenes Abroad and Ethnic Minorities in Slovenia in Janez Drnovšek's center-left government . In 2005 he was appointed by Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel to chair the Slovenian-Croatian History Commission, which the governments of the two countries set up to shed light on their relations.
