from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jari is a Finnish male given name that has been used since around 1940 .

Lineage and History

The name Jari was created by the Finnish writer Jalmari Finne (1874-1938) on the basis of his own first name. Jalmari is in turn the Finnish form of the old Scandinavian given name Hjalmar . Hjalmar is composed of the two old Norse words "hjalmr" ( helmet ) and "arr" (warrior or soldier ). Thus, Jari means "helmet-wearing soldier" in Finnish , an alternative word origin gives Jari the meaning of good friend. So Jari is a relatively young name as it has only been around since the beginning of the 20th century. The name Jari has another origin in Czech. Here Jari is used as an abbreviation for Jaroslav , which freely translated means peacemaker .

According to some sources, the name Jari is said to have been used for the first time in 1937. However, the first entry in the name database of the Finnish registration office was in 1920. At that time there was only one Jari and, according to this source, he remained the only one until 1941. Since then, 45,929 men and one woman (as of November 2007) have been baptized with the name Jari. However, it must be taken into account here that in addition to normal first names, the additional first names that are very common in Finland are also included in this database .

In the early 1990s, over 1500 people in the Netherlands were also baptized with the name Jari. This is probably due to the fact that Jari Litmanen played at Ajax Amsterdam from 1992 to 1999 .
