Red 2G is a blue-red azo dye from the group of acid dyes .

presentation

Red 2G can be synthesized by azo coupling of diazotized aniline with N - acetylated H acid .

properties

Red 2G forms red crystals with absorption maxima at λ = 506 nm and λ = 532 nm.

Use and approval

The dye was approved in the EU as a food dye under the number E 128. In Ireland and Great Britain in particular , it was used to color breakfast sausages and minced meat with a portion of grain . Due to the carcinogenic effects of aniline, which has been proven in animal experiments and which can form in the body when red 2G is broken down under reductive conditions, the safety of the dye was reassessed by the EFSA in 2007 and the approval of red 2G as a food color was revoked by the European Commission . The Irish government had already anticipated the EU-wide ban.

In Switzerland, Rot 2G was approved for minced meat with a vegetable content of over 4% until March 2008.

The dye is approved for cosmetics that are not intended to come into contact with mucous membranes .
