Jarkko Wiss (born April 17, 1972 in Tampere ) is a former Finnish football player and today's coach .

Player career

Jarkko Wiss played from 1991 in the men's team of Tampere PV , a club from his hometown, which was then ranked in the Finnish third division. Right at the beginning of his career, the midfielder established himself as a regular and celebrated promotion to the top Finnish league in his first professional season. After relegation in the 1993 season, he won the championship in the Veikkausliiga a year later with his team . Thus, the team of Wiss also qualified for the 1995/96 UEFA Cup , in which they failed in the first qualifying round to Viking Stavanger from Norway. In addition to this setback on the European stage, the club surprisingly rose again to the second division after the championship season in 1995. Then Wiss changed the club and went to FF Jaro to continue playing in the first division. After just one season, he left the club to start in 1997 for HJK Helsinki , one of the most successful Finnish football clubs. In his first season he won his second championship and the league cup with the new team. In the following season in 1998 Helsinki was only fourth in the championship, but won the national cup and also defended the title of league cup winner.

In 1999 Jarkko Wiss left his home country for the first time and played six months for Molde FK , Lillestrøm SK and Moss FK in the Norwegian Tippeligaen . In the 2001/02 season, the Finn played for the then English second division club Stockport County . At the end of the season the team was relegated to the third division with only 6 wins from 46 games and Wiss moved to Hibernian Edinburgh in the Scottish Premier League . There he played with his team until 2004, but without achieving any notable success. After spending two years in Scotland, the midfielder returned to his home country and played for Tampere United, which was founded in 1998, in his hometown. With this club he won the Finnish championship twice in 2006 and 2007 and the national cup once in 2007. He also played with his club in the 2007/08 UEFA Champions League , in which the team failed in the third qualifying round against Norwegian record champions Rosenborg Trondheim . With the elimination, Tampere slipped into the first round of the 2007/08 UEFA Cup . In the first leg against Girondins Bordeaux , Jarkko Wiss completed the last competitive game of his career on September 20, 2007 and marked the interim 1-0 opening goal for his club in the 7th minute (final score 2: 3).

National team

For the Finnish national soccer team , Jarkko Wiss appeared a total of 45 times between 1996 and 2007 and scored 3 goals.

Coaching career

After his retirement, Jarkko Wiss was assistant coach for the Finnish U-16 national team in 2004 and 2005. After the end of the 2010 season, he then took over the coaching position at his hometown club Tampere United . There he replaced Ari Hjelm , who coached the team for almost a decade. Since 2013 he has been assistant coach of the Finnish U-16 national team again. He has also been the head coach of the Finnish U-18 national team since spring 2014.
