The Jaschilkul is a high mountain lake in the Pamir .
The freshwater lake is located at an altitude of 3734 m in the autonomous province of Berg-Badakhshan in the south of Tajikistan , 130 km east of the provincial capital Khorugh . It originated before the 13th century when a landslide blocked the upper reaches of the Gunt and dammed it up. The Gunt is also called Alitschur above its confluence with the lake . The Jaschilkul extends in an east-west direction over a length of 20 km and covers an area of 36.1 km². Its maximum depth is 52 m. The surrounding landscape corresponds to that of a cold highland desert. In this region, the lowest temperatures of Tajikistan are measured in winter with down to −63 ° C. The northern Alitschurkette runs north of the lake , while the Bogchigir mountain range rises to the south and south-west .
Bird sanctuary
1.5 km from the south-eastern shore of the lake is the small lake Bulunkul . A bird sanctuary ( Important Bird Area ) includes the two lakes, as these, with their adjacent wetlands, form an important habitat for migratory birds. The following species are listed: Alpendohle , mountain Gimpel , Water Pipit , brown-headed gull , rock Gimpel , Goosander , Himalayan King Chicken ( Tetraogallus himalayensis ), the Tibet lark , Brandt's Mountain Finch , Wallcreeper , Lesser Sand Plover , eastern imperial eagle , Pamirlaubsänger ( Phylloscopus griseolus ), ruddy shelduck , saker falcon , Tibet snow Sperling , Himalayan vulture and bar goose .
Flow regulation
In the early 2000s, a drainage control structure was built on Jaschilkul. This is supposed to hold back part of the water in the summer months with more discharge in order to release it back into the river in the winter months with little discharge. This guarantees year-round operation and better utilization of the hydropower plant located downstream.
