Jason Mayélé (born January 4, 1976 in Kinshasa , † March 2, 2002 in Bussolengo ) was a Congolese football player .
Club career
Mayélé spent his childhood in Zaire , now the Democratic Republic of the Congo , until he moved to France in 1985 . There he started playing football, but also tried boxing and basketball. After a stint at a small club from Brunoy , the player was signed in 1994 by the second division club LB Châteauroux . Already in his first season he came to regular appearances and was able to become a regular player in the course of the 1996/97 season. At the end of it, he also managed to move up to the top French league. After the direct relegation in 1998, Mayélé decided to move abroad and signed with the Italian first division club Cagliari Calcio . In Cagliari, Sardinia , he initially remained a regular player, but rose with the team in 1999 in the second division and then lost his regular place. Even though he continued to play regularly, the Congolese accepted in October 2001 the offer to move to the first division club AC Chievo Verona . Although he did not get a regular place in Verona, he often played as a joker for the team. He played his last league game on February 17, 2002 in a 1-1 draw against Lazio .
National team
The player was considered for the first time for the national team of his home country Congo in 2000, and thus after his move to Cagliari . He was successful as a goalscorer in his first year, scoring five goals in five games. For the African Cup of Nations in 2002 he was appointed to the squad, reached the quarter-finals with the selection and was on the field in three of four games. Mayélé, who played a total of ten international matches, was unable to score a goal at the tournament.
death
Mayélé had already returned to the Italian game shortly after the African Cup of Nations when he was on his way to the training ground by car on March 2, 2002 in preparation for the league game against FC Parma on the same evening. In the process, he lost control of his car, which hit another car in which one person died and another was seriously injured. Mayélé was also seriously injured and was taken by helicopter to the Bussolengo hospital, where he died a little later. Due to his death, the planned league game against Parma was canceled and played at a later date.
