The Javorník (German Jaberlich ) is a 684 m high mountain in the southeast of the Jeschkengebirge in northern Bohemia ( Czech Republic ).

Location and surroundings

It is located south of the communities Dlouhý Most ( Langenbruck ) and Jeřmanice ( Hermannsthal ).

history

The mountain has been one of the most popular excursion destinations in the mountains since 1899. The reason for this was the opening of the restaurant "Zum Riesenfass". The wooden barrel with a length of 14 m and a diameter of 12 m, which was erected next to the traditional inn, had previously been built as a wine tavern in Vienna on the occasion of the Kaiser Franz Joseph anniversary exhibition (50th anniversary of Franz Joseph I ) .

The barrel with a capacity of 10,238 hectoliters, which offered space for 400 people on several levels, was placed on the Jaberlich after the end of the exhibition.

In order to increase the attractiveness of their local mountain , which only offered a moderate view, the Jaberlich community collected funds for the construction of a lookout tower . Together with the Liebenau section of the German Mountain Association for the Jeschken and Iser Mountains (DGJI), a wooden tower with several viewing platforms was built, which was 24 m high and opened on May 24, 1924. After the meritorious chairman of the section, it was named Max Blaschka Tower .

Due to the outbreak of World War II , due repair work on the tower could not be carried out. After the war, nobody cared about the dilapidated wooden structure, the association was dissolved and the German residents were expelled . Around 1948 the tower collapsed.

The management of the excursion restaurant was resumed, but the buildings were more and more run down. On September 20, 1974 the giant barrel burned down on Javorník and the mountain lost its attraction for day trippers. Today there is a Eurotel transmission tower on the mountain.

Today the "Pension Riesenfass Javornik" has been rebuilt in the form of a giant barrel on the site of the burnt down giant barrel. A chair lift leads up the mountain. There is also a summer toboggan run and a ski slope on Javorník.

A replica of the barrel built in 1931 above Lázně Libverda ( Bad Liebwerda ) in the Jizera Mountains still serves as a restaurant today.
