Schaffhausen Jazz Festival

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Schaffhausen Jazz Festival (also known as the Schaffhausen Jazz Festival ) is a music festival that has been held annually in Schaffhausen since 1990 . In four days at the end of May around ten formations of current Swiss jazz will be presented in the Kammgarn cultural center and, for some years now, in the Haberhaus . Recordings of the festival are presented on the radio.

history

The festival came about because there were no organizers for current jazz in Schaffhausen, so the situation for musicians and fans alike was unsatisfactory. The guitarists Urs Röllin and Hausi Naef organized the first jazz festival in Schaffhausen from May 16-19, 1990. The groups of Christoph Stiefel , Heinz Affolter , Irène Schweizer , Ljubo Majstorović, François Lindemann , Giancarlo Nicolai & Regula Neuhaus, as well as Kutteldaddeldu , Pregnant Sakes , the SH Big Band Project, Aventure du Pont and Doran - Studer - Burri - Magnenat played there .

Working bands from the current Swiss jazz scene are primarily invited to the festival; In addition, exponents will be presented who play an important role in the development of Swiss jazz. Swiss Radio DRS has been broadcasting concert recordings since the second festival . The number of visitors rose from 1200 in the first year to 1450 (2005), with around 50 to 60% of the audience coming from Schaffhausen.

Since the 15th year of the festival, the event has had an advisory board made up of musicians such as Jürg Solothurnmann or Irène Schweizer, cultural officials and politicians. Since 2005, the “Schaffhausen Jazz Talks” have been part of the supporting program, bringing together musicians, journalists, producers and organizers.

At the 30th anniversary in 2019, the festival organizers ordered a large commissioned composition for the opening evening : Stephan Hodel's oeuvre for brass band, alphorns, yodelers and a jazz saxophonist . The pianist Sylvie Courvoisier and guitarist Christy Doran set further accents with their working bands, as well as the young formations Taïga ( Marc Méan , Matthieu Michel ), Raphael Walser's GangArt (with Jonas Ruther, Niculin Janett, Ganesh Geymeier and Marc Méan), as well as the Aksham quintet around Elina Duni (with David Enhco , Fred Pasqua , Florent Nisse , Marc Perrenoud ). At the same time as the festival, the archive of the Schaffhausen Jazz Festival, including audio and video recordings, went online.
