Jean-Jacques Cevey (born June 23, 1928 in Sainte-Croix ; † May 11, 2014 ) was a Swiss politician ( FDP ).

biography

Cevey grew up in Lausanne , where he obtained his degree in law from the university in 1951 . After that he was editor-in-chief of the newspaper «Journal de Montreux» for 15 years (1955–1970). From 1958 to 1968 he was a city ​​councilor in Montreux . In 1969 the citizens of Montreux elected him for the first time as their city ​​president (mayor), Cevey held this office for 20 years until 1988. He then turned back to journalism and was editor-in-chief of “La Nouvelle Revue de Lausanne” until 1994.

While still a city councilor, he was elected to the Grand Council of the Canton of Vaud in 1965, to which he belonged until 1975. Between 1972 and 1980 he was the cantonal FDP president in Vaud. In 1967 he obtained an FDP mandate in the National Council , where he mainly dealt with economic and foreign policy issues. From 1982 to 1985 he presided over the Free Democratic Group of the Federal Assembly , after which Cevey held the highest office in Switzerland as President of the National Council in 1986/87 .

Cevey was an honorary doctorate from the University of Aix-Marseille and since 1999 has been honorary president of the organization for the Swiss Abroad ASO.
