Jean-Marie Fugère (* 28. April 1818 in Lyon , † 1. January 1882 ibid ) or Joanny Fugère was a French artist , engraver and lithographer .

Live and act

The father Noël Fugère (1784–1862) founded a printing company early on in rue Poulaillerie, No 8 . His brothers Joseph (1819–1887) and Philibert (1822–1901) finally took over the father's business.

Jean-Marie Fugère was initially a student of Joseph-Victor Vibert (1799-1860), who taught as a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon. Here he was also awarded the first prize in the field of engraving in 1838. At the age of 21, Fugère left his hometown to perfect his handicraft in Paris. He finally returned to Lyon in 1845 at the age of 27. Here he initially worked as an engraver at the renowned printing house of Louis-Benoît Perrin (1799–1865) (Louise Perrin for short). In his obituary, Quirin-Jules-Raoul de Cazenove (1833-1910) called him an unrecognized artistic talent, whose talent was pushed into the background by fame and undisputed merit as a master of printing. Cazenove wrote:

"Pendant trente ans, Fugère fut le collaborateur dévoué, infatigable, désintéressè du maître imprimeur lyonnais dont la gloire et le mérite incontesté ont quelques peu obscurci la valeur artistique, très réelle pourtant, you talent de Fugère."

When the Perrin printing company printed the book Notes relatives aux changements introduits dans la généalogie de la maison royale de Savoie by Knight Louis Cibrario (1802–1870) in 1856 , Louis Perrin was awarded the Knightly Order of St. Mauritius and Lazarus awarded for the beautiful coat of arms on the front page. Even if Perrin was awarded the general heraldic design, Fugère played a key role in the success of one of the most beautiful gravure engravings of the time. Fugère engraved many things for Perrin, such as the Augusteaux letters, a typography newly created by Perrin . In addition, there were decorations and inlays , which made it very difficult to filter out the true Creator. In practically all works from the years 1845 to 1875 by Louis Perrin and his successor and son Alfred Louis Perrin (1848–1904), who together with Bernard-Mathieu-Gustave Marinet (1834–1907) ran the printing works after Perrin's death, were printed, Fugère was involved.

At the beginning of his career, he designed and carved antique stones for the book Inscriptions antiques de Lyon, 1846–1854 , which were reproductions of the great works of Alphonse de Boissieu (1807–1886) in the Glyptik -Museum in Lyon ( Musée lapidaire de la ville de Lyon ). During the war he made a petition to Pius IX for Révérend Père Pierre-Baptiste of the Capuchin Order . , a panel made up of Celtic knots , key words and four portraits. This petition was sent in 1869 by the Third Order of the Franciscans to the then Pope Pius IX. cleverly. Her goal was to repent the Holy Eucharist in her house of prayer. The portraits and the frame showed Pius IX, the Bishop of Arras Jean-Baptiste Joseph Lequette (1811-1882) and two clergymen who were not known. They formed the corners of a white cross. The entire table was designed by Fugère.

Other books he worked on were a new edition by Jacob Spons (1647–1685) Recherche des antiquités et curiosités de la ville de Lyon from 1857, Théâtre lyonnais de Guignol from 1859 and many more.

Furthermore, Fugère created a complete portrait of Pius IX. as well as other portraits of Louis Perrin, Antoine-Jean-Baptiste d 'Aigueperse (1787–1861), Alfred de Terrebasse (1801–1871) and the historian Paul de Rapin-Thoyras (1661–1725). The latter portrait was a reproduction of a portrait by Jean Henri Brandon (approx. 1660–1714) and Jacobus Houbraken (1698–1780).

But more important were his 15 portraits, which in the work Galerie historique des acteurs français: mimes et paradistes qui se sont rendus célèbres dans les annales des scènes secondaires depuis 1760 jusqu 'à nos jours: pour servir de complément à la troupe de Nicolet von Edmond- Denis Manne (1801–1877) and Charles Ménétrier (1804–1888) appeared, as well as the 25 portraits in the Galerie historique de la Comédie Française: pour servir de complément à la troupe de Talma, depuis le commencement du siècle jusqu'à l 'année 1853 published by the same authors.

When the portraits were made, he was no longer working in the Perrin printing house. Many of the works were considered remarkable, while others looked a bit stiff. As an excuse for Fugère, however, it must be mentioned that in some cases only old prints or imperfect sketches were available to him during production.

He also contributed a panel for the five-volume work Histoire naturelle des oiseaux-mouches ou colibris constituant la famille des trochilidés by Étienne Mulsant and Édouard Verreaux . While the lithographs by Louis Victor Bevalet (1808-) were popular even among botanists, the quality of the few lithographs in this work on hummingbirds by Paul Eugène Mesplès (1849-1924) and Fugère was criticized.

One of his last works appeared in Lucien Bégules (1848–1935) and Marie-Claude Guigues (1832–1889) book Monographie de la cathédrale de Lyon . It was a portrait of the Saint-Jean cathedral .

In the tradition of the Lyon artist Jacques Stella (1596–1657), he opened a school where his daughter and pupil Claudia David-Fugère (1847–1885) was trained. Eventually Fugère died at the age of 63 after a long and serious illness.
