Jean-Pierre Wils (* 1957 in Geel ) is a Belgian theologian and ethicist . He is a professor at Radboud University Nijmegen and lives in Germany.

Life

Wils studied philosophy and Catholic theology in Leuven and Tübingen and received his doctorate in theology in 1987. His habilitation took place in 1990. He then taught as a professor in Tübingen, Ulm and Freiburg and since 1996 in Nijmegen . In addition to his function as full professor for " theological ethics " at the faculty of theology and as professor for "cultural theory of morality with special consideration of religion" at the faculty of religious studies at Radboud University Nijmegen, he was scientific director of the interdisciplinary ethics center until 2006. He published several books and numerous articles on theological and philosophical ethics in newspapers and magazines. He lives in Kranenburg .

Positions

Wils is a proponent of the Dutch euthanasia scheme , which allows active euthanasia under certain conditions. In Germany, in his opinion, the discussion about euthanasia is conducted “predominantly in the Kantian-Christian tradition”, while in other states the debate is more in the tradition of European liberalism and the individual can make sovereign decisions about his or her own body. According to Wils, “it is not clear which culture is the right one”.

With regard to the facts of blasphemy , he not only rejects criminal prosecution, but generally rejects its justiciability. In a state that declares religion a private matter and tolerates various ideas of God as well as atheistic attitudes, such a crime cannot exist. Such a state must therefore behave neutrally towards the religious and ideological convictions of its citizens.

Wils resigned in January 2009 in protest against the decision of Pope Benedict XVI. to lift the excommunication of the bishops of the traditionalist Society of St. Pius X , including the Holocaust denier Richard Williamson , from the Catholic Church. He justified his resignation from the church by stating that he “no longer wanted to be identified with the anti-modern, anti-pluralistic and totalitarian spirit of this church”.
