Janry , actually Jean-Richard Geurts , (born October 2, 1957 in Jadotville , Belgian Congo ) is a Belgian comic artist who, together with Tome, wrote the series from 1984 (Volume 31 The Mysterious Virus ) to 1998 (Volume 44 The Hunt for Spirou ) Spirou and Fantasio created.

Janry met Tome during his studies at the Institut National des Arts Visuel in Sint Pieterswoluwe near Brussels . Both had the opportunity to establish contacts with Dupa and Francis at an early stage . Janry worked as an assistant for series such as Cubitus and created ink and background drawings. Janry and his friend were also able to work as an assistant for Turk , Greg and Bob de Groot .

The work for the publishing house Dupuis began with the takeover of the puzzle and puzzle site Jeureka from the magazine Spirou . Drawings of the magazine's title character were also sprinkled on the page, which those in charge liked so much that the first short stories were commissioned by Spirou and Fantasio. The first album-length story (46 pages) was Virus , which was pre-published in the magazine in 1982 and released as an album in 1984. During the first volumes of Spirou and Fantasio, Janry worked as both a draftsman and a scenarioist. It was only with The Return of the Z that he concentrated his task solely on the drawings.

With the volume Jagd auf Spirou , Janry radically changed the drawing style that had been successful in the series in 1998. The figures became more realistic, the drawings were more dark than light and cheerful. The scenario switched from funny style to an exciting crime story. This re-imagined Spirou story sparked discussions about whether a traditional comic should be modernized to such an extent at all. Readers divided into opponents and supporters of the new style. Tome and Janry then devoted themselves only to the series Little Spirou , which had been a great success since 1987 . The series sold better than the Spirou and Fantasio volumes .
