Jean Didier Début (born June 4, 1824 in Moulins , † April 5, 1893 in Paris ) was a French sculptor.

Life

Début studied at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris . He was a student of Pierre Jean David d'Angers . His subjects included mythological and Arabic themes, as groups, statues or busts.

He exhibited his work at the Paris Salon in 1848. In 1851 he received the Prix ​​de Rome second class from the Académie des Beaux-Arts . His most significant works include Faun and Bacchantes , Danaide and a statue of Empress Eugénie , which was destroyed in 1871. In Paris he was involved in the decoration of the commercial court, the Paris Opera and the Hôtel de Ville .

His son Marcel Début (1865–1933) was his student and also became a sculptor.
