Jean Francis Auburtin (born December 2, 1866 in Paris , † May 22, 1930 in Dieppe ) was a French painter.

Born as the eldest son of four children of the Lorraine architect Alexandre Emile Auburtin (1838–1899), Jean Francis attended the Alsatian School in Paris from 1875.

Auburtin apprenticed to the painter Louis-Theodore Devilly at an early age. He then studied at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris. He did not apply for the Prix ​​de Rome .

He married Martha Deloye, daughter of an artillery general and sister of one of his classmates from the Alsatian school. The couple went on a long honeymoon through Italy in 1893 .

In 1897 Auburtin studied the marine flora and fauna in the Roscoff and Banyuls-sur-Mer aquariums . From the sketches a painting depicting the seabed was created for the zoological amphitheater in the Sorbonne in 1898 .

Jean Francis Auburtin made many study trips through France. He visited the Mediterranean islands of Porquerolles , Brittany , Corsica and the Pyrenees .

In 1901, at the suggestion of the architect Marius Toudoire, Auburtin designed the paintings in the restaurant hall of the Lyon train station in Paris. Only sketches of the draft have survived.

Auburtin discovered the village of Varengeville-sur-Mer in 1904 . In 1907 he bought a piece of land there and asked his brother, the architect Jacques Marcel Auburtin (1872–1926), to plan a house for him.

Jean Francis Auburtin mainly painted idyllic landscapes and figures of dancing women. In 1914 he portrayed the American dancer Loie Fuller and from 1909 to 1920 the dance company of Isadora Duncan . The structure of his pictures is similar to that of fresco painting.

He was awarded the Legion of Honor.
