Jean Larcher

Jean Larcher (born January 28, 1947 in Rennes , † January 17, 2015 in Cergy ) was a French calligrapher , typographer and type artist. He has worked internationally as a lecturer in lettering and typography. His works are shown in exhibitions and museums around the world.

Live and act

Jean Larcher completed an apprenticeship as a typesetter and typographer at the École Gambetta de la Chambre de Commerce in Paris from 1962 to 1965 . He then worked for a large Parisian advertising agency for a few years . From 1973 Larcher worked as a freelance type artist and calligrapher in Paris. His national and international customers came mainly from the media, advertising agencies, fashion companies and the music industry. From 1975 to 2002 he had a teaching position at the École nationale supérieure d'arts de Cergy-Pontoise in Cergy-Pontoise . From 1978 to 1990 Larcher was a member of the Association Typographique Internationale . In 1982 Larcher taught at Réécriture de l'Écriture École des Beaux Arts in Besançon . From 1985 to 2013 he was a lecturer at various universities, led calligraphy workshops in many European and non-European countries and took part in numerous exhibitions. Some of his works were included in the Berlin Calligraphy Collection of the Akademie der Künste and in 2008 as part of the exhibition Im Zaubergarten der Schrift. His life's work Traits de Charactere - Character Traits - Lines with Character , which his long-time partner Katharina Pieper published in her edition in Homburg, shows the high point of his artistic and calligraphic work. At the beginning of 2015, Jean Larcher suddenly died a few days before he would turn 68 in his studio in Cergy near Paris. A Jean Larcher archive was set up in the Font Culture Foundation to commemorate the type artist .
