Charles Jeantaud (born December 24, 1843 in Limoges , † November 29, 1906 in Paris ) was a French automobile pioneer and designer of electric cars and cars with gas engines in his company C. Jeantaud .

Jeantaud built his first electric car in 1881 and made his family name the brand name for the automobiles that he produced in Paris from 1893 to 1906 .

With his electric car model Jeantaud Duc , the French racing driver Gaston de Chasseloup-Laubat set the first documented speed record for a land vehicle on December 18, 1898 at a speed of 62.78 km / h in Achères ( Yvelines department ) near Paris . This was broken on January 17, 1899 by the Belgian Camille Jenatzy in the same place with the electric car CGA Dogcart with 66.66 km / h.

On the same day in the same place, Gaston de Chasseloup-Laubat brought back the record for himself and Jeantaud with the Duc and 70.31 km / h. On January 27, 1899, the speed record in Achères went back to Camille Jenatzy's CGA Dogcart , with 80.35 km / h.

On March 4, 1899, Gaston de Chasseloup-Laubat with the Jeantaud Duc Profilée vehicle set himself and Jeantaud the third time the record with 92.78 km / h. This record was again lost to Camille Jenatzy, who with his La Jamais Contente electric car was the first person in an automobile to be faster than 100 km / h, namely 105.88 km / h.

However, the company earned money with everyday vehicles for two or more people, mostly based on common carriage types such as Coupé, Gig, Victoria, Landaulet , Phaeton and Cabriolet , because Jeantaud started out as a carriage manufacturer. In online sources he is also said to be responsible for the construction of the first sedan , but there is no evidence. His competitor Krieger , however, had one on offer, the American electric car manufacturer Baker even as early as 1899.
