biography

Nichols was born in the US state of Missouri and grew up in Wyoming . He listened to a lot of country music here , but also jazz and the soul of the late 1960s and early 1970s. When he was 14, his family moved to Austin , Texas . He has seen many concerts in the city, known for its lively live music scene, from Bob Marley ( 1978 ) to the Ramones . He was particularly impressed by the Sex Pistols , which made him move to New York in the late 1970s . Here he became part of the music scene and learned the slitsand know Neneh Cherry . He also began studying painting at the Parsons School of Design , for which he had received a scholarship.

After three years in New York, he moved to London , where he shared an apartment with Ari Up from the Slits, Cherry and legendary producer Adrian Sherwood . Here, too, he became part of the art scene and founded a country band with Joe Brack. They played country classics, bluegrass and old protest songs . In 1990 the small label OKra Records in Columbus (Ohio) heard a tape and offered the band a recording contract. The band, called Fellow Travelers , also included Nichols' wife Loraine Morley, Martin Harrison ( On-U Sound ), and jazz trombonist John Harbourne. The typical sound of the band was a mixture of country-style music, acoustic instruments, Nichols and Morley's voice and elements of dub . They showed their political interests not only in the lyrics but also in the name of the band - sympathizers of the Communist Party were referred to as "Fellow Travelers" in the USA in the 1930s. The band toured Germany regularly in the early 1990s and was quite popular; In 1992 , the CD Just A Visitor was named Record of the Year by Spex magazine . The cooperation with other representatives of the OKra label as OKra All-Stars is considered a milestone of the genre, especially in Germany in the alternative country scene. Jeb Loy Nichols recorded a CD in 1994 with Dave Schramm , Hank McCoy and Ricky Barnes. On the CD was u. a. a country version of Prince's classic Purple Rain ; the opener Big Mistake , written by Nichols, was later a. a. covered by the German country band The Calico Bonnets. In 1997, his song As The Rain was used on the soundtrack of the Gus Van Sant film Good Will Hunting .

Jeb Loy Nichols has been a solo artist since 1995 and continues to record albums. He recorded his 2005 album Now Then in just five days at Mark Nevers ( Lambchop ) studio in Nashville .
