Jedburgh Old Parish Church
The Jedburgh Old Parish Church is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish town of Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders Council Area . In 1993 the structure was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest monument category A.
history
Jedburgh Abbey has been Jedburgh 's religious center since the 12th century . With the Scottish Reformation around 1560, the abbey was dissolved. From then on, the monastery church served as a parish church . After the former monastery church had become both dilapidated and too small for the growing community in the 1870s, it was decided to build a new church. Schomberg Kerr, 9th Marquess of Lothian , provided both funds and land for this project. Construction began in 1872 and was completed in 1875. Thomas Henry Wyatt is responsible for the design . On April 11th of the same year, the first service was held in the new church. The Scottish architect Hippolyte Blanc planned an extension in 1888 .

The church building is located at the junction of Oxnam Road with Newcastle Road ( A68 ) in the south of Jedburgh. Its masonry consists of embossed stone blocks made of dark sandstone with contrasting details of cream-colored sandstone. The three-story bell tower rises to the left of the elaborately ornamented entrance area on the west side. This has an octagonal floor plan and closes with a pointed helmet. Along the nave run aisles with dormer windows . In clerestory are Drilling window arranged. The transept runs at the level of the choir and separates the final apse .
