Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy (often referred to as Jedi Knight 3 ) is the official sequel to the game Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast and was released worldwide in September 2003. It completes the Jedi Knight series.
The game was released in 2003 for Mac OS X, Windows, and Xbox. Several new releases followed, so the game was released on Steam in 2009 for newer Windows versions. The game has also been included in the backward compatibility program for Xbox 360 and Xbox One . In September 2019, a conversion of the game for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 for 2020 was announced.

After the events of Jedi Outcast , Kyle Katarn has remained loyal to the Jedi Knights and helps Luke Skywalker with the education of the students in the Jedi Temple on Yavin.
In contrast to its predecessors, Kyle only appears as a teacher who cannot be played by the player himself. Instead, there is a new contender named Jaden Korr. The player's properties such as race, gender or lightsaber can be determined by the player at the beginning and then plays this character.
The focus of the plot is the antagonist Tavion, who was still active as Desann's assistant in Jedi Outcast . Your goal is to bring an ancient Sith Lord to life and rule the galaxy with his help.
At first, the game focuses on the training of the created character Jaden. The player can choose to accept different, unrelated assignments and thus resolve conflicts in the galaxy.
In the course of the game the player has to decide whether he wants to join the light or the dark side of the force by killing Rosh, a comrade who falls for the dark side for a certain time in the course of the game. On the dark side, not only must Tavion and her followers be eliminated, but also the Jedi who help the player if he chooses the light side of the force. The final battle as a Jedi takes place against Tavion. If, on the other hand, the player chooses the dark side, he will fight Tavion first and then against Kyle Katarn. If Katarn is defeated, however, it does not die and the end remains open.
Gameplay
At first glance, the game principle and the complete game mechanics hardly differ from the predecessor. Both the firearms and the forces of power are largely known from Jedi Outcast . In addition to the fact that you no longer control Kyle Katarn, but the self-created character Jaden Korr, the game differs massively in terms of the lightsaber variants. So the player has the choice of wielding a single lightsaber, two or a double-sided lightsaber. Each weapon has different advantages and disadvantages and for each variant there are different strike and defense combinations. In addition, the acrobatics have been improved, for example, significantly longer wall runs are possible compared to the predecessor.
Multiplayer mode
The four popular game modes from the predecessor have been adopted. The special variants such as Capture the Ysalamiri and Jedi-Master were dispensed with in Jedi Academy . Instead, there is a new mode called Siege, which comes close to the gameplay of Battlefield or Battlefront .

Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy was received very positively by the gaming press, despite the seemingly minor innovations. The Gamestar gave the game as already its predecessor, a GameStar Award for special game joke. From the PC Action there was a Gold Award and PC Games appointed Jedi Academy does for game of the year . The game received 94% positive reviews on Steam .

The prominent supporting character of the game, Luke Skywalker , was spoken again by Hans-Georg Panczak , who already gave the character his German voice in the movies.
