Star Wars Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith is an expansion to Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II released in 1998 . It is the third game developed for the Jedi Knight series and, like its predecessors, was developed and published by LucasArts .

The player begins the game in the role of the Jedi knight Kyle Katarn , but takes on the role of Katarn's student Mara Jade during the course of the game .

The game was positively received by the trade press and described as unusually extensive for an add-on. However, there was criticism of the campaign structure, which was unbalanced with an easy entry and a difficult end.

action

Mysteries of the Sith is set six years after Episode VI . The rebellion forced the troops of the empire further and further behind and founded the New Republic . The game begins on the planet Altyr V , where a base of the Republic is attacked by Imperial troops. The Jedi Kyle Katarn, who is on site during the attack, steals a ferry from the attackers and manipulates the controls of the enemy units, which then destroy each other. On board one of the attacking ships, Katarn found information about a hidden Imperial base on Dromund Kaas , which he began to search.

His student Mara Jade, a former imperial assassin who indirectly joined the republic after the emperor's death , has been entrusted with various assignments. She negotiates a supply contract with the Hutts and prevents pirates from escaping with a stolen holocron , a precious Jedi artifact.

After these missions, she begins to look for her master, since he has been gone too long. When she arrives at Dromund Kaas, she realizes that her weapons, with the exception of the lightsaber and her might powers, have become useless. After an arduous march through a swamp, she reaches a Sith temple where she meets Katarn. In the meantime, he has given himself up to the dark side and is attacking them. Jade defeats him several times and tries to convert him back to the light side, which she succeeds when she puts down her weapon.

Gameplay

Mysteries of the Sith is a shooter that can be played from the first person as well as from the third person perspective . Essentially, the game is based on the concept of Dark Forces II , but the game worlds are no longer as spacious. The course of action has been designed to be more linear and has only one possible outcome. It consists of fourteen consecutive missions. In each mission, the player must complete a given number of tasks. At the beginning, the player controls Kyle Katarn, but most of the time he plays in the role of Mara Jade.

The player has a diverse selection of weapons. Although the player is equipped with Force skills and a lightsaber from the start , there are also some firearms at their disposal. The Force skills are special skills available to Jedi. With the help of the Force, the player can heal his wounds and defend himself as well as damage his opponents.

New elements include security camera hacking and racing against time. The FMV intermediate sequences, which were replaced by sequences in the game graphics, have been removed.

Development history

Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith was designed by LucasArts as an expansion to Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II . The development team was led by Stephen Shaw, who has worked on full throttle and outlaws . Development began right after Outlaws was released, so the game was released just a year after Dark Forces II .

LucasArts improved the Sith engine , especially with regard to lighting effects. The low-resolution FMV scenes have been removed and replaced with scenes rendered in game graphics. Artificial intelligence has also been upgraded. This allows neutral characters to interact with one another without the intervention of the player.

Mysteries of the Sith received good ratings, but they did not reach the level of the main game. GameRankings calculated a meta-rating of 75.60%.

GameSpot's Michael Ryan criticized the game for its imbalance. The first levels are designed too easy and monotonous, while in later levels the level of difficulty increases abruptly. But the last levels are exciting and varied. From a technical point of view, however, the improvements are convincing.
