Jeffrey Patrick "Jeff" Kinney (born February 19, 1971 in Fort Washington , Maryland , USA ) is an American game designer and author of children's books. He wrote the book series Diary of a Wimpy Kid , in German Greg's diary , and Rupert's diary , which in the external form of a child's diary consist of texts and comic drawings .

Life

Jeff Kinney attended Bishop McNamara High School in Forestville , Maryland , and grew up not far from Crossland High School in Fort Washington . He grew up in an educated middle class family with two brothers and a sister. He first studied computer science and finally criminology. After graduating, he worked as a programmer in a law enforcement agency. In the early 1990s he attended the University of Maryland at College Park . In college he created the comic book Igdoof , which was printed in the campus newspaper The Diamondback . In 1998 he began to develop the ideas for the book series Greg's Diary .

In 2009, Kinney was named "The World's 100 Most Influential People" in Time magazine. Also in 2009 he was awarded the Kalbach rattlesnake and the book favorite for Greg's diary .

He lives in Plainville , Massachusetts, with his wife and two sons.

Film adaptations

On July 20, 2009, 20th Century Fox announced a film adaptation of Kinney's Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series . The original planned start date of April 2, 2010 has been postponed. The film was released on March 19, 2010 in US cinemas. Part 2 has been running in German cinemas since June 16, 2011: Greg's Diary 2 - Are there any problems? (Original title: Diary of a wimpy kid 2 - Rodrick Rules ), in which he also has a guest appearance as Holly Hill's father. Two more films followed.
