Jeffrey Frankel

Jeffrey Alexander Frankel (born November 5, 1952 in San Francisco ) is an American economist and university professor .

Career, research and teaching

Frankel first studied at Swarthmore College , where he received a Bachelor of Arts in economics in 1974 . In 1978 he graduated as a Ph.D. at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . After a year as an assistant professor at the University of Michigan , he moved to the University of California, Berkeley in 1979 . From 1984 he was an associate professor there , and in 1987 he was appointed full professor. In 1986 he became a research fellow of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation ( Sloan Research Fellow ). In 1999 he followed a call from Harvard University and has been researching and teaching at the Harvard Kennedy School since then .

Between 1983 and 1984 Frankel was a member of the Council of Economic Advisers of US President Ronald Reagan . In 1996 he returned to the board under US President Bill Clinton and was chief economist until 1997, after which he was a simple member of the board until 1999. He also worked as a consultant for the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank . Between 2002 and 2015 he sat on the Advisory Panel of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and between 1999 and 2014 he was an advisor to the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston . Between 1992 and 2017 he was the founding director of the World Economy and Macroeconomics Program of the National Bureau of Economic Research . Frankel has been a member of the Council on Foreign Relations since 1995 .

Frankel's work focuses on the world economy, international trade and macroeconomics, with a particular focus on questions of monetary and tax policy , currencies , economic crises and environmental issues.
