Jefim Rotstein ( Russian Ефим Бенционович Ротштейн / Jefim Benzionowitsch Rotschtein; born May 16, 1933 ) is a German chess player .

Life

Rotstein was instructed in chess by Rafail Gorenstein in the Lviv Pioneer Palace . His coach at the local chess club was Alexei Sokolski . At that time, his circle of friends included Leonid Stein and Boris Katalymow. With the shared first place in the Ukrainian youth championship he qualified for the team championship of the Soviet youth in 1951. In Leningrad , the selection of Ukraine reached the second place behind Moscow . After finishing school, Rotstein studied at the Polytechnic Institute and worked as a mechanical engineer in Stanislaw .

At the tournament of the strongest Ukrainian championship candidates in 1957 in Odessa , he shared second place behind Eduard Gufeld . He often took part in Ukrainian championships. In 1959 he took ninth place in Kiev, and in the same year was awarded the title of Master of Sports of the USSR . In the II. All-Union folk tournament on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Pravda newspaper in Vladimir in 1962, he was fifth, tied with six other players. The victory went to Yuri Nikolaewski from Kiev. In the semi-finals of the Soviet championship in Riga in 1962 , Rotstein shared eighth place with Aivars Gipslis .

After the fall of the Soviet Union, Rotstein was eligible to play for the Ukrainian Chess Federation, and in 2002 he switched to the German Chess Federation . He played club chess in Austria for SV Tschaturanga Neubau (with whom he played in the 1st Bundesliga from 2005 to 2007 ) and for ATSV Stein-Steyr , and in Belgium for Schachfreunde Wirtzfeld . In Germany he plays successfully in the senior division on a national level: in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2017 and 2019 (in the age group 65+) he was German champion , 2006 and 2007 - tournament winner. He also achieved good results internationally, placing himself in the top 10 at the Senior World Championships in 2000 in Rowy and in 2008 in Bad Zwischenahn , as well as at the European Senior Championship in 2005 in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe . With Phoenix Cologne he took part in the European Senior Team Championships.

Before the introduction of the Elo numbers, his best historical Elo number was 2534 in November 1959. He is a FIDE Master , his son Arkadi holds the title of Grand Master .
